Mariska Hargitay says Law & Order: SVU has stayed engaging by trying new approaches to storytelling rather than following a fixed formula. Season 28 is scheduled to premiere on NBC on Oct. 8, 2026, with the series’ 600th episode expected in November.
Mariska Hargitay says Law & Order: SVU has stayed relevant by continuing to push its storytelling in new directions instead of relying on a set formula. In an interview with Good Housekeeping ahead of the show’s season 28 premiere on NBC on Oct. 8, 2026, Hargitay discussed the creative uncertainty she sees as central to the series’ longevity.
Hargitay, who has played Olivia Benson since 1999, described the work of making each season feel fresh as an ongoing effort. “Every day you’re working to make something good, something great, something that feels new and not like you’re working off a blueprint that tells you how things have to be built,” she said in an email to the magazine.
She also said that television and storytelling do not come with instructions for producing a successful series. “There are so many beautiful unknowns, so many intangibles and surprises that make something work,” Hargitay said. Her comments offer her perspective on the show’s durability; they do not establish a single, measurable reason for its continued audience or longevity.
The upcoming season is also set to include the series’ 600th episode in November, according to the report. NBA player Jalen Brunson and actor Christopher Meloni, Hargitay’s former castmate, are expected to appear as guest stars. The report identifies the milestone and planned appearances but does not provide episode titles or further details about their roles.
A Long-Running Series Keeps Changing
Hargitay’s remarks put the focus on the creative challenge facing a drama that is entering its 28th season: sustaining a familiar series while finding ways to make new episodes feel distinct. Her account suggests that the show’s production process values experimentation, but it is her assessment as a lead actor, not an independent measure of the show’s cultural relevance or audience response.
The season premiere and 600th-episode milestone give viewers two clear reference points for the next run. The planned appearances by Brunson and Meloni may also attract attention from basketball fans and longtime viewers, though the report does not describe the guest roles or how they fit into the storylines.

Benson’s Nearly Three-Decade Run
Hargitay has portrayed Benson since 1999, and the character is returning for the new season. That long tenure gives her a direct view of the series’ continued production, while the 28-season count reflects the show’s place as a long-running television drama.
Hargitay made the comments in an interview with Good Housekeeping connected to her ongoing partnership with Purina’s Purple Leash Project. The interview centers on the show’s creative longevity; the source material does not provide ratings, audience research or other data that would independently test the claim that the series remains relevant.

Audience Response and Episode Details
The interview does not identify which specific creative choices have helped the series maintain its audience, nor does it include ratings or viewer data. Hargitay’s explanation is her own view of the show’s approach, rather than a claim supported by audience research in the report.
Details about the November milestone episode, including its exact air date and plot, are not provided. The report says Brunson and Meloni are set to guest-star but does not specify their characters, the episodes in which they will appear, or whether any plans could change.
